Pharmacists may supply the alternative set out in the protocol instead of the prescribed product, if appropriate and the patient agrees.

The Department of Health and Social Care has issued a Serious Shortage Protocol: during a serious shortage, pharmacists may supply an alternative strength, formulation or quantity instead of the prescribed product, if appropriate and the patient agrees, without going back to the prescriber.
